~ Chapter Fifteen ~

As my tears ebbed, I sat up and sniffed. The moon was rising, peeking over the tree line and the night air was cooling down fast. Outside of my protective gazebo, snow began to fall and blow with a rising breeze, suddenly obscuring all visibility. I felt the chill seep through my jeans from the cold, damp bench but I ignored it. I don’t deserve to be comfortable. I hurt Luke, and Riley too. I’m a horrible person.

I tucked my hands deep in my coat pockets, brought up my legs and propped my chin on my knees. A fresh wave of tears spilled from my eyes and coursed down over my cheeks just as my cell phone started to ring. I ignored it and let it go to voicemail. Whoever it was, wasn’t anyone I wanted to talk to at this point in time. I heard the alert bell, letting me know that a voicemail had been received. I pulled my phone out to view the message. It was from a number I didn’t recognize in California.

I pushed a wayward strand of my static-ridden hair back behind my ear then played the message, putting it on speaker.

“Hello, this message is for Lacey Greene. This is doctor Allison Jackson at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center out here in California. We received your application for a position on staff as a nurse practitioner and we’d love to offer you a job. Give me a call back after the holidays at 310-823-8911.”

I let out a strangled cry and hung up. I tried to put my phone back in my pocket but missed and dropped it into the snow on the ground beneath the bench. Shivering violently, I got to my feet and bent to pick it up. “Good thing it’s waterproof,” I muttered aloud, through chattering teeth. The cold was getting worse. I’d need to head for the warmth of the lodge and fast if I wanted to stave off hypothermia.

Using the flashlight on my phone, I glanced around for my toque and couldn’t remember if I’d had it on or not when I left the barn. Thinking about being back in the barn threatened another wave of tears. I squeezed my eyes shut and forced myself to stop. Get it together Lacey, you can cry when you’re back in your own room.

“If I had it, I lost it,” I muttered, searching through my empty pockets. “Same with my gloves I guess.” I leaned over to look under the bench but saw nothing but drifts of snow in the cold, white light of my phone. I scanned the floor of the gazebo and saw nothing but wet wooden floor boards and more snow.

Jamming my hands deep into my pockets once more, I tucked my chin inside the top of my jacket, put my head down and moved out from the shelter of the gazebo into a blizzard. My tracks from earlier had been filled in and blown over as had the pathway.
